Exhibition "Women in Resistance"

On Saturday 20 June 2015, the international photo exhibition by French photographer Pierre-Yves Ginet, entitled Women in Resistance, was launched by the Alliance Française de Durban at the Botanical Gardens in Durban.

On Saturday 20 June 2015, the international photo exhibition by French photographer Pierre-Yves Ginet, entitled "Women in Resistance" was launched by the Alliance Française de Durban at the Botanical Gardens in Durban.

"Women in Resistance", a travelling exhibition, showcases different women from around the world who are in various ways fighting for equality, justice, dignity and survival. Ginet has captured 22 breathtaking portraits of 25 groups of women in 25 countries, accompanied by English/French texts.

Ambassador of France to South Africa HE Elisabeth Barbier attended the opening along with Ela Gandhi, granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr Albertina Luthuli, eldest daughter of Albert Luthuli, Coral Vinsen, Black Sash and human rights activist, Gcina Mhlophe, a story teller, and Deputy Mayor of eThekwini, Nomvuso Shabalala.

Women in KZN are encouraged to contribute to the greater goal of this initiative of empowering women, by taking a photograph of themselves during the opening and the duration of the exhibition.

Women can take selfies, write a poem, take a video or share their stories here.

To conclude the opening ceremony, a guided tour of the Orchid House was organised by female orchid specialists Hedralien Pieters and Janet Gates.

-* The exhibition will run until 10 July 2015.
-* Entrance is free.

After Durban, the exhibition will be moved to the Alliance Française de Pretoria (17 to 31 July) and Alliance Française de Johannesburg (7 to 20 August).

It has also been on display in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Maseru in Lesotho.
