WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO STUDY ABROAD IN FRANCE?
Having graduated with a double Bachelor’s degree in French and in International Relations, I have always been interested in Europe and the European Union. I also pursued and graduated in the Certificate in European Studies, a specific program at the Florida International University. I’ve always been particularly drawn to France, to its language, its culture, and its history. I interned at the French Consulate in Miami for a year. This experience gave me a direct insight into the French professional environment, and allowed me to collaborate with amazing people, all of whom supported my desire to go to France and pursue my studies in the French language. Without their support, I undoubtedly wouldn’t have ever dared to follow the necessary steps. I then chose to take advantage of my knowledge and of my experiences in the French setting, and was finally admitted to the Université Sorbonne-Nouvelle Paris III at the Master’s in Information and Communication program.
HOW HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE IN FRANCE CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL GOALS?
My studies in France, and more precisely the Paris III program I was enrolled in, have provided a wealth of knowledge I didn’t have before. This program is very dense in its theoretical content, especially in sociology, media studies, and cultural studies. Despite my background in communication, I had never taken such complete courses that covered all the fields of communication studies. More specifically, I was introduced to gender studies, which have been inspiring in my personal life; and I’m very interested in research and analysis of female depictions in American television. Furthermore, it’s been a real challenge and a source of pride to be able to pursue my studies in France. Last month, I wrote my Master’s thesis in French and I’m currently applying to a research Master’s program for a second thesis. This exercise wasn’t always easy, but once finished, felt gratifying when studying in another language.
CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ANECDOTE OR MEMORY THAT HAPPENED DURING YOUR STAY IN FRANCE?
Unfortunately, for me, the most memorable events in France, and notably in Paris, were been the November 13 attacks. These were very difficult moments for me, being away from home, as well as for my family. Despite the period’s prevailing violence, I witnessed a transformed Paris, where the sight of strong, brave, solidary, and united people deeply moved me. I also wrote an article for OUTLOUD, a Miami newspaper, about the attacks and the aftermath that ensued in Paris. I further understood the importance of creating a second family while living abroad away from home and from your loved ones. My friends have supported me a lot during this scary and solitary moment.
IN ONE SENTENCE, FOR YOU, STUDY IN FRANCE MEANS…
A unique adventure that must be lived with lots of courage and an open mind!
